More than profiles

Portrait

Alu Menziken is a global leader in high-quality extruded aluminium profiles and complex extrusion press products for sophisticated applications in the automotive industry, construction, industry and commerce, pneumatics and precision machining.

Based in Reinach, Switzerland, the company was founded by Alfred Gautschi back in 1897. Since 2007, Alu Menziken has been owned by Montana Tech Components, a Swiss technology and innovation oriented industrial group with over 60 sites and 6,000 employees all over the world.

In 2014, Alu Menziken took over the Euromotive business unit from SAG-Alutech in Ranshofen, Austria, and integrated it into the group under the name of Alu-Menziken Euromotive. The acquisition enabled the company to complement its product range by lightweight aluminium components for automotive and aerospace applications.

Alu Menziken employs a total of 390 people in Switzerland and Austria, turns over 90 million EUR and continues to expand. “We are currently investing 40 million EUR in a new production location in Romania, which is scheduled to start operations at the end of 2017,” says Ingolf Planer, CEO and President of the Board of Management. “We are still on course for growth, despite decreasing aluminium prices.”

Alu Menziken is operating in a very competitive market with more than 500 suppliers of all sized across Europe. “There are substantial overcapacities in the European extrusion technology industry,” states Mr. Planer. “This is why you can only grow in niche segments.”

Alu Menziken achieves this growth by providing value-adding services such as further processing of semi-finished products using CNC machinery, both at the company’s Swiss and Austrian plants.

“The market is very fragmented and characterized by a large number of small suppliers,” explains Mr. Planer. “Alu Menziken has just about 0.5% of the European market, but we supply to customers who demand more than just a profile. And with the new production facility in Romania, we can offer everything from a single source: value-added niche products and high-volume standard products. In addition, the Romanian plant will further enhance our competitiveness as a result of lower wages.”

Alu Menziken’s claim to serve customers requiring more than just aluminium profiles is underlined by the company’s complete range of services covering the complete value chain until the finished product and beyond.

“We can offer our customers the complete spectrum, from engineering, billet moulding in customer-specific alloys, extrusion and sawing to surface finishing, CNC machining, logistics and recycling,” states Mr. Planer.

A product Alu Menziken is particularly proud of is the economy class aircraft seat which the company makes for Recaro. “The profiles are made in Reinach and, after further processing at our second plant in Menziken, go to Ranshofen in Austria where they are bent, welded, clinched and assembled,” explains Mr. Planer. “From Ranshofen, they are shipped directly to Recaro in Germany and to the USA.”

The seat structures are customized to Recaro’s individual requirements – like all Alu Menziken products. “The customer is king,” says Mr. Planer. “Our customers typically have demands our competitors cannot meet. We then develop a made-to-measure complete solution that includes everything from the unique design to individual logistics services. Our advantages are our coverage of the entire value chain, our superior flexibility and our absolute customer focus. We are committed to supporting our customers in making their processes more efficient. And if required, we take responsibility for everything that is necessary to achieve this.”
