Chemicals for the paint industry

D&R Dispersions and Resins is a relative newcomer to the alkyd market although it is built on many years of experience in the business. It was founded in 2010 by partners Arkadiusz Kowalczyk and Jerzy Jarosz to manufacture components and fillers for the paint and lacquer industry. Having taken over AKZO Nobel’s alkyd resin manufacturing plant in Włocławek in 2010, the new company officially launched the production and sale of alkyd resins on 3 January 2011.

“In the months that followed, we also successfully implemented a production line for the manufacture of styrene-acrylic dispersions and have since supplemented the range to include new types of dispersions,” explains Vice President Arkadiusz Kowalczyk, who was employed in the chemicals industry for many years before founding this venture.

A total of two million EUR was invested in new equipment to bring the plant up to modern standards. A further grant was won from the European Fund in 2013 to build new production lines for dispersions and modified alkyds, which are due to go on line in the second quarter of 2015.

Today, D&R Dispersions and Resins has three main product groups: alkyd resins including high-solids ALKiD® and iMPERAC®, styreneacrylic water-based dispersions AKRYViL® and acrylic polyols and thermoplastics AKRYSOLV®. The company offers both standard products and customized products for specific purposes.

“In the main, our products are used for metal, wood protection coatings and DIY products,” says Mr. Kowalczyk. “Our bestsellers are modified alkyd products used in the manufacture of protective metal coatings. We work closely together with our customers and help them in the application of new products. ” New safety standards and environmental concerns mean that the industry is constantly being challenged to come up with new, safer, more ecological solutions.

A dedicated group of product engineers work in the company’s own research and development laboratory. They ensure that existing products are made in accordance with the standards expected by the industry and develop new products with new applications. “R&D is extremely important for us as it helps us improve product quality as well as the production process,” adds Mr. Kowalczyk. “We also operate on the principle of an integrated quality management system that helps us limit harmful emissions and protect the environment.”

D&R Dispersions and Resins is a typical B2B company targeting clients in the paints and coatings industry in Poland and throughout Europe. Historically, its biggest customer is AKZO Nobel, but it also works with a number of other major manufacturers. Exports account for 50% of turnover. “We have direct contacts with our big customer accounts and sell to smaller companies via a network of partners throughout Europe,” says Mr. Kowalczyk. “They appreciate our short reaction times and flexible production capacity. We produce exactly what they want according to their specifications and timeframe.”

Having started in 2011 with a workforce of 44 employees, D&R Dispersions and Resins now employs 62 people and generates annual turnover of 18.8 million EUR. It attributes this positive growth to its well-motivated team and high-quality product as well as productive partnerships. This year, it will be exhibiting at the European Coating Show in Nuremberg, Germany together with partner Quaan GmbH, a German supplier of a variety of chemical ingredients. “We hope to demonstrate a number of new modified alkyd products and are working on the development of more specialized products to meet market requirements in the future.”
