“On the continent, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and Benelux are important markets for us,” he explains. “We also supply some clients in the UK, the USA, Japan, Hong Kong and China. In the coming years, we would like to enhance our market position in our existing markets and eliminate several white spots on our map, too. We are searching for partners in new countries who share our mission to improve the conditions of the workers in the factories. Cashmere comes from Mongolia, northwest of China. Therefore, all production facilities are located in the region. Together with my partner Jean-Pascal Candau, I visited several production facilities in Bangladesh, and we were shocked and refused to cooperate with those companies. The workplaces and sanitary facilities were horrible. We talked to the President of the local Chamber of Commerce and chose a number of partner companies who are willing to take on social responsibility. Before we choose a local production partner, we always visit the facilities and check them carefully. We are selective, and we are a reliable business partner. Whenever we choose a production partner, we lay great emphasis on know-how, seriousness and reliable delivery. The price comes second. Often, our cooperations last ten years or even longer.”
Under its main brand Not Shy, MCC launches two collections a year. Usually, a collection boasts around 150 different pieces. All the clothes are either made of 100% cashmere or of a cashmere-fiber mix.
In addition to this, MCC presents a linen summer collection every year. “We are true experts in cashmere and linen and aim to work with natural fibers only,” says Mr. Criq. “We love to play with the colours – this is one of our specialties.”
The French cashmere specialist sells via different distribution and marketing channels. The sales network includes its own boutiques, online shops such as vente-privee.com, marketplaces and duty-free shops.
“Currently, we run 15 boutiques in France,” says Mr. Criq. “By the end of this year, we will have opened up another five. In the course of 2017, we will add ten new boutiques. We aim to have around 40 shops by the end of 2020.”
In order to expand its global network, MCC Not Shy will exhibit at this year’s cashmere trade fair in Cannes in October. Also, the company regularly participates in the Preview in Berlin, the Who’s Next in Paris, the White in Milan and the Salon des Tuileries in Paris.
Drawing on over 25 years of experience in cashmere, Mr. Criq and Mr. Candau draw on profound know-how in materials and processing. “We were in business long before cashmere became popular,” says the President. “Today, our experience is one of our greatest assets and ensures our competitive edge.”
Olivier Criq and Jean-Pascal Candau, who is Managing Director of the company, founded MCC in 1999. Today, Not Shy is the company’s most prominent label. With a staff of around 50, MCC achieves almost 40% of its turnover through export activities.
“We will stay true to our passion for natural fibers and our socially responsible strategy,” says Mr. Criq. “Our products and our business approach meet the spirit of the age. Therefore, we are positive about the future.”
