Based in Košana in southwestern Slovenia, ORO MET designs and produces tool plates for all types of tools and toolmaking applications. “We are focused on custom-engineered tool plates that 100% fit our customers’ individual requirements,” says CEO Jernej Pavlin.
ORO MET was founded by Janez Suša in 1986 as a small tool workshop. Since then, the company has developed into a major supplier to the national and international tool industry.
“Today, ORO MET is part of the ORO Group which includes three further companies,” explains Mr. Pavlin who joined the company in 2008 and became CEO in 2009 – exactly at the time of the European economic crisis. “Due to the crisis, we decided to enhance our international activities,” states Mr. Pavlin. “Today, we ship 70% of our tool plates abroad. Our largest export market is Germany, followed by the Balkan states and the countries of ex-Yugoslavia, Scandinavia, the UK and Austria.”
The strong international growth of ORO MET is also owed to its cooperation with the German tool steel firm MWT Meyer. “To further strengthen our successful cooperation we acquired a 30% share in the company last year,” explains Mr. Pavlin.
ORO MET employs 62 people, is provided with 3,000 m² of modern manufacturing space and has annual sales of 11.7 million EUR. “Since 2010, we have grown by an annual average of 30%,” states Mr. Pavlin.
The company’s main product line is comprised of tailor-made tool plates. The custom plates are available in all kinds of individual dimensions and with weights of up to 10 t.
“We also have a small range of standard tool plates,” says Mr. Pavlin. “These plates are made according to Hasco or Meusburger standards, two recognized international quality norms for tool plates.”
The product portfolio is rounded off by special, CNC machined plates as well as standard and custom-made frames made from various qualities of steel.
The tool plates delivered by ORO MET are at the start of a well-defined processing chain, as Mr. Pavlin describes: “Our tool plates are used by toolmakers and transformed into tools which are then used in manufacturing. The final customers of our products include die cutters, injection moulders and aluminium processing firms.”
As an internationally operating supplier, ORO MET is competing with tool plate companies from China. “Due to the long transport distance, however, competition is limited as time is an increasingly important factor,” explains Mr. Pavlin. “In addition, prices are approximating more and more. And if the price is lower quality is lower, too.”
ORO MET, as opposed, delivers high quality at very competitive prices, has many years of experience in processing steel, is very flexible in meeting individual customer demands and sticks reliably to delivery deadlines.
In the last five years, the Slovenian tool plate specialist has invested 1 million EUR in new manufacturing equipment every year. “We shall reduce this a little to 800,000 EUR a year to further expand our market position,” says Mr. Pavlin. “The goal is to achieve 5 to 10% annual growth in the next few years.”
