gamescom 2026: Record Number of Exhibitors with a Footnote
At the start of gamescom in Cologne, Koelnmesse reports over 1,700 exhibiting companies, more than ever before. Three out of six visitor days are already sold out. Anyone who wants to understand the record should know how it came about.
How the Record Came About
Initially, more than 1,600 exhibitors were announced. The number increasing to over 1,700 is explained by the organizer as due to late registrations from group participations: companies at joint stands are counted individually. According to Koelnmesse, the exhibition space of 233,000 square meters is fully booked for the first time this year.
Together, this describes not so much a last-minute surge in demand as a fair that has reached its capacity limit in Cologne.
Opening Night Live as a Pace Setter
The event opened for the audience on Tuesday evening with Opening Night Live hosted by Geoff Keighley and co-host Eefje "sjokz" Depoortere. New material for Final Fantasy VII Revelation was shown, the antagonist in Gears of War: E-Day was unveiled, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Songs of the Past was presented for the first time. Around 5,000 viewers attended the show in the arena, and the recording is available on the YouTube channel of gamescom. On August 27, from 8 PM, the awesome indies show will be live-streamed.
What Trade Visitors Gain
For the industry, gamescom remains Europe's most important business platform. The developer conference gamescom dev already opened on August 24, and over the week there are formats for networking and professional exchange. Those planning to travel at short notice need to plan: according to the organizer, tickets for Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday are sold out.
The fully booked space has a consequence that extends beyond 2026: growth in Cologne is hardly possible through additional square meters anymore. Where Koelnmesse directs the surplus interest is shown by the branches gamescom latam in São Paulo and gamescom asia x Thailand Game Show in Bangkok.
