ORGATEC 2026: How Offices Are Transforming from Workplaces to Social Spaces
Hybrid working, artificial intelligence, and new employee expectations are transforming the role of the office. If many tasks can be accomplished regardless of location, the physical workplace must offer more than just desks and meeting rooms. From October 27 to 30, 2026, ORGATEC in Cologne will address exactly this development. The leading international trade fair for workspace and contract solutions brings together manufacturers, planners, architects, interior designers, and decision-makers, and for the first time focuses on an overarching theme: 'From rooms to relationships: designing spaces in an ever-changing world.'
This shifts the focus more on the question of how workspaces and object rooms can promote collaboration, exchange, and belonging. At the same time, the fair remains a business platform for furniture, interior fittings, acoustics, lighting, smart office solutions, as well as media and conference technology. The offerings range from object planning to the furnishing and operation of professionally used spaces.
Spaces must be able to do more than just function
The working world has fundamentally changed in recent years. Video conferences and hybrid models make physical presence at many workplaces less of a given. Consequently, the function of the office also changes. Therefore, ORGATEC highlights two developments. Under 'Human-to-Human-Experience', the focus is on understanding spaces more as places of personal encounters and collaboration. The second megatrend 'Transition' deals with flexible solutions that can adapt to constantly changing requirements. Sustainability, digitization, and new forms of collaboration are considered together. For companies, this raises an economic question: Which areas are actually still needed, and how must they be designed so that employees will use them willingly and productively?
International brands face challenging markets
The economic conditions for the furniture and furnishings industry remain demanding. Nonetheless, according to Koelnmesse, ORGATEC records broad international participation. In the Workspace Solutions area, companies including Bene, Brunner, Haworth, Humanscale, Interstuhl, Kinnarps, KOKUYO, PALMBERG, Sedus, Thonet, and Viasit are announced. In the Contract Solutions area, Artemide, COR, Fermob, Framery, Kettal, Muuto, and Strähle Raum-Systeme are among the confirmed companies. For 2026, the fair is adopting a more compact hall concept intended to more tightly cluster the offering segments. In a challenging market environment, the event is thus intended to function more strongly as a place for concrete business contacts, product comparisons, and investment decisions.
Work Culture Festival Connects Design, HR and Technology
An important component is again the "Wherever Whenever – Work Culture Festival", which is organized together with the Industry Association for Office and Working Environments. Lectures, panels, workshops, and interactive formats are spread across two halls. The program is divided into three thematic areas. "Empowered Experience" deals with work environments that are supposed to foster motivation and satisfaction. "Connected Cultures" focuses on hybrid collaboration and corporate culture. Under "Radical Impact," sustainability, disruptive innovations, and Artificial Intelligence are at the forefront. AI is specifically addressed. Media scientist and entrepreneur Miriam Meckel speaks on the first day of the fair about how Artificial Intelligence is changing work and society and what opportunities may arise from it.
Design Post becomes part of ORGATEC
New in 2026 is the official integration of Design Post Cologne. The heritage-protected design location, immediately next to the exhibition grounds, will become an additional exhibition venue of ORGATEC and at the same time a central part of the concurrently held idd cologne. Within the framework of ORGATEC, companies such as Flokk, Hund Office, Klöber, Schneeweiss Interior, and Wagner Living will be presented. In addition to product innovations, exhibitions, events, and networking formats are planned. The visit to the Design Post is free of charge. Thus, the event grows beyond the traditional exhibition halls and becomes part of a larger interior week in Cologne.
Innovation Award Presents New Workspace Concepts
The Architecture+ Office Innovation Award will also be presented again in 2026. The award, organized together with AIT, takes place for the 14th time and honors products and concepts that combine design and function of modern work and object spaces. In addition to the award ceremony, there is a special exhibition and guided tours. The guided tours are intended to contextualize selected innovations and give visitors the opportunity to engage directly with the involved companies.
Four Days for the Workplace of Tomorrow
ORGATEC 2026 will take place from October 27 to 30 at the Koelnmesse grounds, daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. In 2026, the question of what a particularly modern office looks like will be less central. More interesting is what function the workplace must still fulfill. Hybrid work has decoupled many activities from a fixed location. Encounters, corporate culture, and quality of stay move into focus. ORGATEC aims to show how new concepts for offices and professionally used spaces can develop from this.
