Biocides testing for safer lives
Interview with Alexander Brux, Managing Director
In northern European latitudes, mosquito bites are little more than a minor irritant. However, the arrival of tropical disease-carrying species due to climate change highlights a growing danger. Biocides testing specialist BioGenius GmbH focuses on ensuring that people can live safer lives by carrying out efficacy testing for biocides.
Founded in 2004, BioGenius has evolved significantly under Alexander Brux’s leadership since he became Managing Director in 2022. With a background as a chemical lab assistent and chemical engineer and extensive experience within the company, he has been instrumental in navigating the complexities of regulatory environments.
Innovative testing services
BioGenius offers a comprehensive range of services aimed at ensuring the efficacy and safe application of various products, including insect repellents and biocides. The company operates its own insect breeding facility, which supports rigorous testing protocols for over 26 species of insects. “We don’t just test products; we recreate the conditions in which they will be used, ensuring that they are effective and safe for consumers,” Alexander Brux emphasizes.
Complex regulatory framework
The regulatory landscape for biocides and plant protection products is complex and ever-evolving. Since the introduction of the European Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) in 2013, approximately 50% of existing active substances have been evaluated, with the remaining half still pending assessment. “This creates a significant demand for testing as companies seek to navigate the approval processes,” explains Alexander Brux.
Commitment to transparency
One of the hallmarks of BioGenius is its commitment to transparency. The company’s operational data, including financial performance, is openly shared within the organization. “We believe that transparency leads to better decision-making and a stronger team dynamic,” Alexander Brux explains. This practice fosters a culture of accountability and trust among employees.
Global Reach
BioGenius serves clients worldwide, including in Europe, USA, and Asia. This allows it to leverage global trends and innovations. “Many of our clients are multinational corporations looking to ensure their products meet European standards,” Alexander Brux explains, emphasizing the company’s role as a bridge between different markets.
Future prospects
Looking ahead, Alexander Brux is optimistic about BioGenius’s growth potential. The company has recently expanded its testing facilities in Bergisch Gladbach. “We’re positioned in the upper segment of the market,” he asserts, noting that the ongoing need for rigorous testing and regulatory compliance positions BioGenius well for future success. With a projected revenue of up to 4 million EUR for 2025, the company is on track for its best year yet.
