With Profile to Perfection: Cleaning What Moves

Interview with Christian Löwe, Managing Director of HEUTE Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG

HEUTE Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG ProfilGate®-System
The ProfilGate® system stops up to 80% of all dirt before it is carried into the production and logistics halls.

Cleanliness meets system – and has been doing so for over a century. HEUTE Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG from Solingen develops intelligent cleaning solutions for industry, logistics, and public facilities. With precision made in Germany, innovative technology, and a clear focus on sustainability, the family business demonstrates how tradition and progress ideally complement each other. A conversation with Managing Director Christian Löwe about consistency, movement, and the power of good ideas.

Wirtschaftsforum: Mr. Löwe, HEUTE is a family business with a history spanning over 100 years. How has the company evolved over time?

Christian Löwe: Our company was founded in 1905, initially focusing on shoemaking machines. In the 1950s, my grandfather developed the first sole cleaning machines – a real milestone, as it laid the foundation for our current focus. Today, we concentrate on three product areas: shoe polishing machines, sole cleaning systems, and our patented ProfilGate® technology.

Wirtschaftsforum: Shoe polishing machines are quite a different area. How does that fit into the portfolio?

Christian Löwe: This has historically developed; we have had shoe polishing machines in our portfolio from the beginning. Today, this area is a solid third pillar. Our shoe polishing machines are primarily used in hotels, government offices, or corporate offices – anywhere where a well-groomed appearance is required. Here we score with quality, durability, and a timeless design. This area also benefits from our experience in mechanical engineering.

Wirtschaftsforum: Why is sole cleaning so important for industrial applications?

Christian Löwe: In sensitive production environments like the electronics industry, recycling companies, or laboratories, strict hygiene regulations apply. Our sole cleaning machines are used here to remove dirt from employees' shoes upon entering the work area, as changing shoes is too cumbersome and time-consuming.

Wirtschaftsforum: Another of your core products is ProfilGate®. What is behind it?

Christian Löwe: ProfilGate® is one of our most important innovations. It is a cleaning system embedded in the floor. Tires, casters, and shoe soles are cleaned dry or wet as they are driven over or walked over – all without active involvement of the staff. The system is used worldwide in clean production areas, for example in the automotive industry, in plant construction, and the food industry – anywhere where the dragging in of dirt or bacteria matters. It thus not only reduces dirt ingress but also the risk of downtime due to contaminants.

New at ProfilGate®: Specifically tight grids for use with automated guided vehicle systems (AGVs)

Wirtschaftsforum: What is particularly important to you in the development of your products?

Christian Löwe: Durability and functionality are our top priorities. Our machines are designed for decades of use, and many devices still operate reliably after 20 or 30 years. At the same time, we adapt our ProfilGate® solutions to individual customer needs – from special sizes to specific materials. Thus, we continuously develop our offerings. A current example is a new version of our ProfilGate® cleaning systems with particularly close mesh and special grates – specifically developed for automated guided vehicles (AGVs). With this, we specifically respond to developments in automation and intralogistics.

Wirtschaftsforum: Sustainability is a hot topic. How does HEUTE embody this idea?

Christian Löwe: By building products that last a very long time, we automatically promote sustainable business practices. In addition, we focus on retrofit components and energy-efficient systems. We also continue to develop our manufacturing in Solingen towards resource conservation. For us, sustainability is not a trend, but a business responsibility.

Wirtschaftsforum: You manufacture exclusively in Germany. What advantages does this offer you and your customers?

Christian Löwe: The most important advantage is being close to our customers – technically, logistically, and culturally. We guarantee short distances, direct contacts, and the highest manufacturing quality – and that on the entire global market. 'Made in Germany' still stands for trust internationally. Our customers know they can rely on HEUTE – both in delivery and in service.

Wirtschaftsforum: How do you see the future development of your company?

Christian Löwe: We grow organically and sustainably. The advancing automation in industry requires more cleanliness and process reliability. This opens up new markets for us – both nationally and internationally. Our export share is about 70% of our sales, but there is still a lot of potential. At the same time, we are constantly working on further developing our products and adapting them to new requirements.

Wirtschaftsforum: And what, personally, is special to you about HEUTE?

Christian Löwe: Clearly: The combination of tradition and innovative power. We are open to new ideas, technologies, and markets. It's a great feeling to lead a company that brings so much experience – and yet looks forward every day with a fresh perspective.
