The Next Evolution of Packaging
Interview with Lubomir Kroupa, COO of NEXTPACK AG
The need to find practical alternatives to plastic transport packaging is more urgent than ever. In order to reduce the total amount of plastic produced and transition to a circular system, companies must develop innovative solutions that meet the demands of the modern economy. NEXTPACK AG from Deggendorf has taken on this challenge and already offers sustainable packaging solutions today.
"Plastic is outdated!", emphasizes COO Lubomir Kroupa, thus underscoring the clear mission of NEXTPACK. The company aims to replace plastic, styrofoam, and even wood with rapidly renewable and recyclable raw materials. "We believe that switching to sustainable materials is an important step for our environment," explains Lubomir Kroupa, highlighting that the use of honeycomb cardboard, corrugated cardboard, and recyclable PE foam is not only environmentally friendly but also functional.
Custom Solutions
NEXTPACK specializes in customized packaging solutions that meet the specific requirements of customers. "We develop solutions that not only protect products, but also improve the processes of our customers," explains Lubomir Kroupa. This is achieved through close cooperation with the customers, to understand their needs and challenges. "Impossible is not a word!", is the motto of the company, which is distinguished by high flexibility and creativity.
Technological Competence
Although corrugated and honeycomb paper have been on the market for a long time, NEXTPACK stands out by using these proven materials in innovative ways. The technological competence of NEXTPACK is another advantage. "Our customers appreciate our multi-material competence," says Lubomir Kroupa. Combining different materials enables the development of optimal solutions that are both cost-effective and sustainable.
New Directions in Packaging
Until now, Styrofoam has been the preferred packaging material in many industries due to its versatile applications, low production costs, and excellent protective functions. "These properties have led companies to often rely on plastic to package and transport their products," explains Lubomir Kroupa. However, he disputes this tradition and highlights the advantages of Nextpack solutions: "Our honeycomb paper and corrugated board not only provide the necessary product protection but also reduce the weight of the packaging. This enables more efficient logistics and reduces transportation costs." The name ‘NEXTPACK’ refers to the next evolution of packaging, which is not only more environmentally friendly but also pursues innovative approaches to meet the challenges of today's world. Thus, NEXTPACK positions itself as a forward-looking provider, actively implementing the necessity to move away from plastic.
Market Position and Growth
Since its founding more than ten years ago, NEXTPACK has evolved from a startup to an established medium-sized enterprise. "Last year we achieved a turnover of 8 million EUR and anticipate 9.5 million EUR this year," reports Lubomir Kroupa. With approximately 50 employees, the company has continuously expanded its capacities and is on a solid growth path.
Pressure to Change is Increasing
The potential for further growth exists despite higher costs. "The willingness to pay more for sustainable solutions has not been very high so far, but it is increasing," explains Lubomir Kroupa. The pressure from legislators and consumers to use sustainable packaging is growing. The European packaging regulation, which mandates certain recycling rates starting in 2030, forces companies to rethink their packaging strategies.
Efficiency Enhancement through Automation
Another important aspect for NEXTPACK is automation. "We need to automate more to remain competitive," emphasizes Lubomir Kroupa. Through the use of new technologies, the company aims to increase efficiency while simultaneously securing the quality of its packaging solutions. "It’s about going paperless where possible and digitizing collaboration within the company," he adds.
Customer-oriented Approaches
NEXTPACK places great importance on a customer-oriented approach. "We want our packaging to use as little material as possible while also providing the best protection possible," says Lubomir Kroupa. This requires close collaboration with clients to understand their specific needs and develop innovative solutions. "We love the search for the brilliant idea that makes a difference," he adds.
Plans for the Future
Looking to the future, NEXTPACK has big plans. Lubomir Kroupa emphasizes that the company will continue to work on expanding its portfolio. "We don’t want to produce everything ourselves, but also enter partnerships with other companies to offer a broader range of solutions," he explains. Combining various materials will be key to meet the diverse requirements of customers and to create a wide array of sustainable packaging.
