Packaging That Packs a Punch
Interview with Florian Münch-Glatzer, Managing Director of Oldenburger Kartonagen-fabrik U. Burmeister GmbH
For over five decades, Oldenburger Kartonagenfabrik U. Burmeister GmbH, based in Bad Zwischenahn, has been a reliable partner for customized packaging solutions made from corrugated cardboard. What began as a classic cardboard box production has evolved into a modern, versatile company that offers both diverse creative packaging and efficient logistics concepts.
Founded in 1972 by Udo Burmeister in Oldenburg, the Oldenburger Kartonagenfabrik now looks back on more than 50 years of company history. The location has shifted to Bad Zwischenahn, but the commitment remains the same: to develop and manufacture high-quality packaging solutions with maximum flexibility. For about three years now, Florian Münch-Glatzer has joined the 2nd family generation in the executive management. He started in the company as an apprentice in 2004. The Oldenburger Kartonagenfabrik sees itself as a typical family business that acts based on values: flat hierarchies, strong customer orientation, and a close connection to the employees are priorities for the leadership team. The product portfolio is as broad as the customer structure – from start-ups to large corporations. In addition to classic corrugated and die-cut packaging, the focus is increasingly on high-quality offset packaging and displays. Co-packaging and development in the in-house development department are also part of the service offering. "We stand for flexibility. We want to make everything possible for our customers and support them from the idea to delivery," says Florian Münch-Glatzer. Just-in-Time solutions including inventory planning and logistics services are particularly in demand. Here, the company sees itself as a real problem solver.
With a Sense for Needs and Trends
The last few years, marked by a pandemic, war, and resulting uncertainties, have drastically changed the market and pose new challenges for all involved. "The market has become very dynamic," says Florian Münch-Glatzer. The Oldenburg cardboard factory is responding with consistent customer proximity – and is committed to sustainable action. Most recently, a large photovoltaic system was installed on the roofs of the halls; printing is done exclusively with water-based and solvent-free inks. All waste products are recycled.
Consulting on packaging optimization through reduced material use and more efficient processes is also part of the sustainable approach. Since 2016, the company has relied on a digital data management system that today virtually maps and makes comprehensible all processes. Employee retention is of particular importance to Florian Münch-Glatzer: "We want to create a work environment in which people feel comfortable and can develop." Looking to the future, he says: "Our goal is to always be one step ahead of demand, that is, to identify trends early, to make use of new technologies and to further sharpen our sense for customer needs."
