Cultivating Herbs, Vegetables, Flowers at Home
Interview with Peter Laan, Managing Director of Tuinplus BV
More and more people enjoy cultivating vegetables, herbs, and flowers themselves. The success largely depends on the quality of the seeds used. The Dutch company Tuinplus BV supplies these seeds in excellent quality and now wants to increasingly offer its products in the German market. The family-owned company from Luinjeberd impresses with a wide range of various seeds and additional gardening products.
"We have extensive experience and offer excellent quality," promises Peter Laan, Managing Director of Tuinplus BV. "We regularly test our products in our own laboratories. Additionally, we continuously check the germination capability of our seeds in our test gardens. We deliver quickly and reliably and work trustfully with our customers."
Tuinplus regularly introduces new products to the market, and even the seed mixes are tailored to meet the wishes and requirements of consumers. With its private labels Buzzy, Oranjeband zaden, Horti Tops, Buzzy Organic, Holland Mill, Sogo, and Bûten, Tuinplus covers an extremely broad spectrum. Additionally, products from suppliers like Kixx and Franchi Sementi, as well as flower bulbs from Florex, are included.
700 Varieties
Buzzy caters to both experienced hobby gardeners and beginners with seeds such as mini watermelons and colorful peppers. Oranjeband zaden's portfolio encompasses about 500 different seeds for vegetables, flowers, and herbs – including many exclusive cultivated varieties. The own brand impresses with high yield, good taste, appealing appearance, long shelf life, as well as resistance to diseases and tolerance to drought.
With 700 varieties, the range of Horti Tops, a brand that has been around since 1906, is even broader. Here, the breeder finds herbs, leafy vegetables, fruit vegetables, onion, tuberous and root vegetables, cabbage, bean- and stem vegetables, as well as annual, biennial, and perennial flowers.
Aid for Cultivation
Buzzy Organic seeds cover the continuously increasing demand for organically produced seeds. Here, experienced hobby gardeners as well as eco-conscious beginners can find seeds that comply with the EU organic regulation and are Skal-certified. The packaging is also made from remnants of tomato plants and recycled paper. A manageable assortment with popular products such as basil, leaf lettuce, or sunflowers characterizes Holland Mill.
All articles of these seeds exclusively grown in the Netherlands are offered at the same price, which is also very affordable. Products from Sogo ensure optimum conditions for the seeds. These include propagation boxes, plastic and peat pots, plant labels, seed spreaders, and covering films.
However, you can also find tying wires, thermometers, small garden tools, and kneepads here. With the brand Bûten, Tuinplus targets garden enthusiasts who particularly care about the well-being of feathered garden visitors. They are supported with bird baths, feed, birdhouses, and nesting aids.
Many Distribution Channels
About 30 years ago, Koos Laan, the father of the current managing director Peter Laan, who has been working at Tuinplus for 15 years, founded the company. Today, Tuinplus is a 100% subsidiary of the nearby seed producer Pieterpikzonen. Tuinplus employs 25 people, with a turnover of eight million EUR. The company exclusively supplies professional buyers. Its customers include, among others, DIY stores, garden centers, Raiffeisen markets, the retail sector, drugstores, and supermarkets.

In addition, Tuinplus supplies distributors and private label providers. They are offered not only consumer-friendly small packages but also bulk containers. "For us, the Benelux region is the most important market," says Peter Laan. "However, in the past five to six years, we have also become increasingly active in countries like Germany, Denmark, France, and the United Kingdom."
Own Webshop
To maintain contacts with existing customers and to establish new ones, Tuinplus presents itself at various trade fairs both domestically and abroad. These include the Private Label Fair PLMA in Amsterdam, the Spogafa in Cologne, and the IPM in Essen. In addition, the sales team in Luinjeberd takes care of customers in the Netherlands, while individual retail managers handle clients abroad. In addition to various traditional sales channels, Tuinplus relies on its own webshop, which, however, is also exclusively reserved for resellers. And with social media, the company plays digital marketing channels. "Our warehouse management is completely organized digitally, and the order picking is done using scanners," emphasizes Peter Laan.
Staying Future-Ready
In addition to biologically produced seeds, Buzzy Organic, Tuinplus is increasingly focusing on plant-based packaging and on polyethylene, which completely decomposes and can be disposed of through the paper waste bin. "We are a classic family business," describes the CEO. "For us, values such as loyalty, trust, and commitment are central." He wants to achieve stable growth in the coming years and ensure the business's future viability with new products that follow trends.
