The Formula for Sustainable Growth
Interview with Marcus Acker, Managing Director of Imhoff & Stahl GmbH
Chemical distribution is the link between manufacturers and industry. It ensures that chemical raw materials reach their destination safely, flexibly, and on time – in nearly all sectors. For over 160 years, Imhoff & Stahl GmbH has stood for quality, expertise, and partnership in chemical distribution. With a wide range of products and a clear vision for the future, the mid-sized company headquartered in Mannheim successfully asserts itself in a dynamic market environment.
"Our roots go back to 1863 when we were founded as a chemical trading company," says Managing Director Marcus Acker, who has been with the company for twelve years and has been managing director for ten years. Since 1967, Imhoff & Stahl has been an official BASF contracting partner, which emphasizes the high professional quality and the grown trust in the company's performance. Since 1998, the company has been part of the Hugo Häffner Group, benefiting from a strong network in the industry.
Chemical Expertise with History and Future
Today, Imhoff & Stahl GmbH specializes in the distribution of BASF chemical intermediates - especially amines, acetyl and carbonyl derivatives, as well as polyalcohols. These are used among others in the construction industry, the metal systems MIM, the Chemical Industry, the adhesive and the plastic industry, the lubricant production as well as the paint and varnish manufacturing. With over 600 products in the portfolio and its own logistics structure including 6,200 m2 of storage space and several external warehouses, the company offers its customers customized, flexible solutions - even for special requirements.
Despite their success, Imhoff & Stahl GmbH faces similar challenges to many medium-sized businesses: "Finding good staff is currently one of our biggest tasks. This directly affects our product quality and service performance," openly explains Marcus Acker. Nevertheless, the managing director remains optimistic – focusing on long-term prospects rather than quick fixes. "We see ourselves as a reliable partner with clear values. Sustainability, partnership, and expertise are not merely buzzwords for us, but principles we live by."
Particular attention is given to digitalization: processes are continuously optimized, and artificial intelligence is expected to play an even greater role in the future. Currently, one of the company's employees is even pursuing a master's degree with a focus on AI – an example of the company's lived spirit of innovation.
Imhoff & Stahl also demonstrates responsibility when it comes to sustainability. The goal is to reduce the CO2 footprint—whether through more efficient logistics or new product developments. Meanwhile, the company is working on an organic expansion of its portfolio: alongside chemical intermediates, iron powder, Catamold®BASF, and carbonyl iron powder for powder metallurgy are increasingly in focus.
