The maritime economy is under significant pressure to change. Ships are to become more efficient and environmentally friendly, artificial intelligence is changing development and operations, and geopolitical conflicts are bringing the security of sea routes and critical infrastructure into greater focus. From September 1 to 4, 2026, SMM will bring these topics together in Hamburg. The leading international trade fair for the maritime economy will once again be a meeting point for shipping companies, shipyards, suppliers, technology companies, and political decision-makers.

International participation is also growing. For 2026, 26 national pavilions have been announced, two more than in the previous edition. Additionally, exhibitors from eleven countries will be represented at SMM for the first time. New official country representations include Brazil, Cyprus, India, and Vietnam.

Visitors should keep an eye on these highlights

  • In the Energy Efficiency Hub (Hall A2), 24 companies will demonstrate concrete approaches to more efficient ship operation: AI-based energy management, hybrid and electric drives, wind assistance, solar, and retrofit.
  • At Start-ups@SMM, 19 young companies will present technologies from AI, robotics, autonomous systems, data analysis, and sustainable shipping. Several world premieres are announced, according to the organizers.
  • What's new is the Naval Hall in Hall B8, dedicated entirely to maritime security and defense for the first time. Over 50 companies and organizations will showcase technologies for the navy, surveillance, communication, and underwater applications. Five themed stages directly in the exhibition halls will focus on energy efficiency, digitization, innovation, and maritime security. Maritime Future Summit: On September 2nd, the use of generative AI in ship development and operation will be a central topic on the Digital Stage.
  • Maritime Career Market: On September 3rd and 4th, companies will meet with young professionals and skilled workers. Students, pupils, and accompanying teachers will have free entry on these days.

Efficiency becomes an economic matter

One of the major focuses in 2026 is on energy efficiency. The background is a problem that is currently of particular concern to shipping: which climate-neutral fuels will prevail in the long term is still undecided. Therefore, measures that already reduce energy consumption today are gaining importance. In the new Energy Efficiency Hub, market-ready solutions will demonstrate what is already possible. These include digital optimization systems, AI applications, hybridization, wind propulsion, alternative fuels, and technologies for utilizing waste heat. Energy efficiency is increasingly treated as a competitive factor, not just as a climate issue.

AI and Robotics meet traditional maritime industry

Digitalization also receives a lot of attention. The Maritime Future Summit on September 2 will discuss, among other things, how AI changes the construction and operation of ships. The rapid development of new technologies is also evident in the start-up area. 19 young companies present solutions ranging from automated welding in shipbuilding to AI-based fleet evaluations to autonomous systems. On September 2, they will compete against each other with their technologies at the Maritime Start-up Day & Night.

Maritime Security gets its own hall

One of the most visible innovations is the Naval Hall in Hall B8. There, SMM is bundling exhibitions, conferences, and networking on maritime security and defense for the first time. In addition to more than 50 companies in the hall, other exhibitors across the rest of the exhibition grounds are presenting technologies that can be used both civilly and militarily. The themes include the protection of critical infrastructure, cybersecurity, autonomous systems, underwater technologies, and maritime surveillance. The international MS&D Conference also takes place there on September 3rd and 4th.

Ports and skilled workers also come into focus

Not just the ships themselves are changing. With the new specialist conference ALL ABOUT PORTS on September 2nd and 3rd, SMM is also addressing the future of ports as logistics, energy, data, and security hubs. Subjects include automation, digitization, sustainable port development, and resilient supply chains. On September 3rd and 4th, focus shifts to another scarce resource: skilled workers. The Maritime Career Market brings together companies, universities, and potential applicants. The search is now not only for traditional maritime professions, but increasingly also for IT, software, automation, and engineering competencies. SMM 2026 will take place from September 1st to 4th at the Hamburg Messe venue. It is open from Tuesday to Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm, and on Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. Those who come to Hamburg will encounter an industry where several developments converge simultaneously: decarbonization, AI, efficiency, shortage of skilled workers, and a changed geopolitical security situation. SMM is likely to particularly show which solutions have already reached practical application – and where the maritime transformation is still at the beginning.
