Interview with Reiner Pfeiffer, Managing Director of PFEIFFER Metalltechnologie GmbH

In the interview, Managing Director Reiner Pfeiffer discusses the philosophy and strategies that make PFEIFFER an indispensable partner in aluminum processing.
Wirtschaftsforum: Mr. Pfeiffer, can you tell us something about the history of PFEIFFER Metalltechnologie?
Reiner Pfeiffer: PFEIFFER Metalltechnologie GmbH was founded in 1977 by my father, Gerhard Pfeiffer. He started in a garage and has steadily expanded the company over the years. In 2011, my brother and I took over the management and continued the tradition. Over time, we have specialized in various industries, including automotive, mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering.
Wirtschaftsforum: How has the company developed since its founding?
Reiner Pfeiffer: We have evolved from a small operation to a significant provider in aluminum processing.
Today, we have more than 8,000 m2 of production and storage space and employ around 100 staff members. Our product portfolio is diverse, and we are capable of efficiently manufacturing medium and large series.
Wirtschaftsforum: Which industries do you primarily serve?
Reiner Pfeiffer: We are active in five main industries: sun protection technology, automotive, vehicle construction, mechanical engineering, and electrical/energy technology. The automotive sector accounts for about 35% of our revenue, with the rest spread across the other business areas. Thus, we are well diversified, which helps us cushion market fluctuations.
Wirtschaftsforum: What are the strengths that distinguish your company?
Reiner Pfeiffer: Our greatest strength lies in our flexibility and speed. We have a modern, extensive range of machinery and rely on CNC technology, which allows us to produce large series cost-efficiently. Additionally, we have our own tool and fixture construction, which gives us a high depth of production and independence from external suppliers.
Wirtschaftsforum: How do you deal with the challenges of the industry, particularly in terms of supply chains?
Reiner Pfeiffer: The challenges are diverse. However, our flexibility helps us to quickly adapt. The increased transport costs and uncertainties in the supply chains have prompted us to optimize our processes, meaning we manufacture all significant production scopes in-house and work closely with our suppliers in material procurement. We also focus on local sourcing where possible.
Wirtschaftsforum: Digitization is a major topic in the industry. How has PFEIFFER responded to it?
Reiner Pfeiffer: We have already invested heavily in digitization. Our production planning is largely digitized and we use modern technologies to optimize the production process. However, we are pragmatic and only implement digital solutions when they make sense.
Wirtschaftsforum: What role does sustainability play in your company?
Reiner Pfeiffer: Sustainability is a central part of our corporate strategy. We operate a photovoltaic system and focus on recycling. In addition, we have introduced an environmental management system to minimize our ecological footprint. We are aware of the responsibility we have towards the environment and society.
Wirtschaftsforum: How important is the training of new skilled workers for your company?
Reiner Pfeiffer: This issue is our top priority. We train both industrial mechanics and businesspeople, and place great emphasis on ensuring that our employees have the opportunity to develop internally. This not only secures our future but also promotes employee retention.
Wirtschaftsforum: Are there already plans for the next generation?
Reiner Pfeiffer: Yes, my son has been in the company for two years and is gradually being introduced to different areas. We want to ensure that the next generation is well-prepared to continue running the business in the future. For this, we rely on a strong and independent management team that can successfully run the business even without us.
Wirtschaftsforum: What are your goals for the future?
Reiner Pfeiffer: We aim to continue to grow and strengthen our market position. This includes winning new customers and deepening existing customer relationships. We strive to further enhance our innovative strength and integrate new technologies to offer our customers the best possible solutions.
