WindEnergy Hamburg 2026: Record in Offshore Wind, But the Industry Lacks New Projects
Germany's offshore wind energy is growing again. But precisely this year, no new offshore areas are being tendered. Why WindEnergy Hamburg 2026 is therefore more important than previous editions. If one only looks at the current figures, one might believe that the offshore wind industry has left its most difficult years behind. By June 30, 2026, there were 1,764 offshore wind turbines with a total capacity of 10.8 gigawatts operational in the North and Baltic Seas. In the first half of the year, 84 new facilities with a combined output of 1,077 megawatts went online. At the same time, renewable energies covered about 58 percent of Germany's gross electricity consumption, according to preliminary calculations by BDEW and ZSW. The industry is growing again. Nevertheless, hardly anyone at the WindEnergy Hamburg 2026, taking place from September 22 to 25, will speak of a new boom. Because behind the record numbers lies a problem that is far more important for project developers, manufacturers, and suppliers than any new capacity record: in 2026, no new offshore areas will be tendered in Germany. That is exactly why the WindEnergy Hamburg this year might be less of a product showcase and more of a mood barometer for the entire European wind energy market.
The Problem Lies Not in the Wind, but in the Bidding Model
The lack of bids does not indicate a declining demand for wind energy, which does not simplify the situation. Europe needs significantly more renewable energy in the coming decades than it does today. Data centers, heat pumps, electromobility, and the electrification of the industry will continue to increase electricity demand. So why is no one investing? From the perspective of many companies, the problem lies in the current bidding model. The previous system of negative bids has lost its appeal in times of high financing costs and rising material prices. Those investing billions in an offshore wind park need the most stable economic conditions possible. This is precisely why industry associations such as BDEW, BWO, and VDMA Power Systems have been demanding a reform of the Wind on Sea Act for months. The focus is on so-called Contracts for Difference (CfD). Operators receive a guaranteed reference price for their electricity. If the market price is below this, the state compensates the difference. If it's above, parts of the revenues flow back. For investors, this primarily means one thing: more planning security. Whether and when this reform comes is likely to be one of the most discussed topics at the WindEnergy Hamburg.
Why Storage in 2026 is Almost More Important than New Turbines
Anyone who last visited the trade fair in 2024 will notice a significant change this year. No longer is the focus solely on the wind turbine. With the new Energy Storage Area, battery storage, power electronics, and intelligent energy management systems are gaining more focus. This is no accident. The higher the proportion of renewable energies, the more vital becomes the question of how electricity can be stored, transported, and flexibly utilized. Wind energy does not always produce electricity when households or industries need it. That is precisely why battery storage, hydrogen solutions, smart grids, and digital control systems are increasingly becoming the actual key to the energy transition. For many small and medium-sized enterprises, this now represents even greater growth opportunities than in traditional turbine construction. Software companies, network equipment manufacturers, battery providers, and specialists in power electronics are likely to be among the winners of this year's fair.
