The Future of Craftsmanship is Smart
Interview with Sascha Schalk, Managing Director of COOL & SMART GmbH
Whether air conditioning, heat pumps, or smart building automation – the topics of heating and cooling are more dynamic than ever before. Rising energy costs, climate change, and the political focus on renewable energies have significantly changed the industry in recent years. Innovative technologies, digital solutions, and a growing awareness of energy efficiency shape today's market. In this dynamic environment, COOL & SMART GmbH from Ludwigshafen has established itself as a pioneer – with an approach that combines modern technology, sustainable thinking, and traditional craftsmanship.
When Sascha Schalk founded COOL & SMART GmbH in 2019, he had a clear vision: cooling and heating go hand-in-hand – and craftsmanship can achieve more than many believe. Today, the company employs about 50 people, grows annually by 30 to 50% and has created another strong pillar with the sister company WARM & SMART.
Comprehensive, digital, premium
"I never wanted to just hang air conditioners on the wall," Sascha Schalk says. "From the beginning, it was about looking at heating and cooling comprehensively." While many traditional air conditioning manufacturers focus mainly on summer, COOL & SMART thinks in systems – considering efficiency, sustainability, and comfort throughout the year. The company has consciously positioned itself in the premium segment. "We work exclusively with our own staff and not with subcontractors," the managing director emphasizes. "Our customers have a contact person who keeps everything in view from start to finish." Quality and reliability are top priorities – even if it means not always being the cheapest provider. The concept is popular: 80 to 90% of the clientele are private individuals who are willing to invest in sustainable solutions and smooth processes. In the showroom in Ludwigshafen, they can experience the latest air conditioning units and heat pumps live – including draft-free systems that significantly increase home comfort. "Once someone experiences how pleasant draft-free cooling is, they usually opt for this technology – even if it is somewhat more expensive," says Sascha Schalk.
Craftsmanship 4.0 in Ludwigshafen
COOL & SMART is not only technically but also organizationally up-to-date. All processes – from the first customer contact to consultation and onboarding new employees – are digital. "We understand smart not just as 'controllable by smartphone', but as an attitude: Work smart, not hard," says Sascha Schalk. Early on, he invested in modern communication forms: In 2020, the company invested about 100,000 EUR in its own video studio. This has created a platform with 24-hour information videos that cover all customer questions about air conditioners and heat pumps. "That was quite unusual in the craft industry at the time," recalls Sascha Schalk. "Today, we save time with it – and our consultations have improved nonetheless." Artificial intelligence has long been part of everyday life. "AI does not replace our employees, but makes good employees even better," explains Sascha Schalk. Whether in the warehouse, in planning, or in customer service – digital tools help simplify processes and ensure quality. At least as important to the entrepreneur is the future of the craft. "We want to restore the honor of craftsmen," he emphasizes. At the technical vocational school Ludwigshafen, he regularly gives lectures to inspire young people for the craft. "I want to show that craftsmanship can be high-tech – and that one can find their future in it." For the future of the company, Sascha Schalk has clear goals: expanding the staff, new specializations such as energy consulting or electrical engineering in-house – and above all: "I want everyone in the region to know: when you buy from us, you get the best quality, latest technology, and genuine service." COOL & SMART thus exemplifies a new self-image in craftsmanship – digital, committed, and run with passion. Or, as Sascha Schalk puts it: "If craftsmanship, then with intelligence – and with pride."
