More than Spare Parts: How the Automotive Aftermarket is Reinventing Itself

The automotive industry is in the midst of a profound transformation. Electromobility, software-defined vehicles, and AI are shaping vehicle development. At the same time, a market that is often overlooked is changing: the Automotive Aftermarket. Workshops, suppliers, parts manufacturers, and service providers must realign their business models. What is important technologically and strategically will be demonstrated at Automechanika Frankfurt from September 8 to September 12, 2026.

According to forecasts by Frost & Sullivan, the global automotive aftermarket will grow by approximately 5.8% worldwide by 2026. This is remarkable given that the industry is simultaneously grappling with supply chain issues, geopolitical uncertainties, and a weakening economy. Countervailing forces: vehicles are aging, the independent parts market is gaining importance, and new revenue streams are emerging around electric mobility, digitization, and AI. This is changing the industry's self-concept. High-quality spare parts and efficient repairs are no longer sufficient. Workshops that want to keep up today combine software, electronics, and traditional mechanics, thus becoming de facto technology partners to their customers.

The Workshop Becomes a Technology Center

With each new generation of vehicles, the importance of digital systems grows. Software-defined vehicles, connected vehicle architectures, and driver assistance systems are fundamentally changing the requirements for maintenance and repair. Diagnostics, calibration, and software updates are now just as much a part of everyday workshop life as traditional services. Automechanika Frankfurt 2026 addresses this transformation with its new HighTech4Mobility Forum. The forum will focus on software-defined vehicles, autonomous driving, and digital mobility services. Companies such as Google Cloud and the Boston Consulting Group will demonstrate how artificial intelligence can create additional value in the aftermarket in the future. Robotics and automated systems are also on the agenda. “The success story of Automechanika Frankfurt continues,” says Detlef Braun, Managing Director of Messe Frankfurt. Despite a challenging economic environment, the trade show expects about five percent more exhibitors than at the previous event. Around 4,400 to 4,500 companies from more than 80 countries are expected at the fully booked Frankfurt exhibition grounds in September. For Braun, this is a clear sign that international platforms are gaining in importance, especially in times of economic uncertainty.

Transformation Requires Exchange

Technological change alone is not sufficient. Equally important is the knowledge transfer between manufacturers, workshops, suppliers, and service providers. Therefore, Automechanika is specifically expanding its offerings to include new networking formats and opportunities for professional exchange. "Innovation, transformation, sustainability as well as education and training will be the focus of the event in 2026," says Michael Johannes, Vice President Mobility & Logistics. The goal is to better connect companies and promote collaborations that accelerate the transformation of the industry. Another key topic is the future of damage management. As part of the Automechanika Academy, insurance companies, paint manufacturers, technology companies, and industry associations discuss the impacts of AI, automation, and robotics on accident repairs. At the same time, the consequences of a shortage of skilled workers, rising investment costs, and increasing market consolidation are addressed.

Knowledge becomes a key competitive factor

With technological changes, the demands on employees also increase. New propulsion technologies, driver assistance systems, and digital diagnostic methods require continuous training. Therefore, Automechanika Frankfurt is expanding its qualification offerings. Free, certified practical workshops provide up-to-date know-how: from damage diagnosis and body repair to painting techniques, ADAS calibration, and alternative propulsion systems. What's new is that all content will remain permanently available online after the fair, and thus can be used far beyond the five days of the fair. The automotive aftermarket is evolving from traditional spare parts business to a technology-driven service market. Digitalization, AI, and connected vehicles are changing not only products but entire business models. Automechanika Frankfurt makes this development visible.
