“Quality isn’t a buzzword – it proves itself on the road every single day”

Interview with Martijn Wiggers, Manager Sales & Service at Welgro BV

Technology, processes, markets – all of these matter. But at its core, it’s about reliability. Martijn Wiggers describes a company shaped over decades, now navigating new challenges while staying true to its roots.

European Business: Mr Wiggers, how long have you been with Welgro?

Martijn Wiggers: Four and a half years – and in my current Sales & Service role just as long. That developed hand in hand.

European Business: Welgro is celebrating an anniversary.

Martijn Wiggers: Yes, 65 years. Founded by Theo Welling as a family business, the name “Welgro” comes directly from that. From the start, there was a mix of technical expertise and pioneering spirit. That still defines us today.

European Business: How did it begin?

Martijn Wiggers: With slurry spreaders. Soon after, we developed bulk vehicles – initially simple pressurised tanks behind tractors. Over time, this became today’s specialised trailers for dry bulk materials.

European Business: What do you offer today?

Martijn Wiggers: Custom-built trailers – two- or three-axle, depending on customer needs. We also provide fixed superstructures and complete systems, including compressors or blowers.

European Business: Who are your customers?

Martijn Wiggers: Manufacturers handling their own transport and logistics companies. Many come from animal feed, but also flour and plastic granulates.

European Business: You operate internationally.

Martijn Wiggers: Yes, mainly in Europe. Around 60% of our business is outside the Netherlands.

European Business: How do you stay close to customers?

Martijn Wiggers: Through our own teams and agents. The key is proximity – to existing and new clients alike.

European Business: What about digitalisation?

Martijn Wiggers: It’s essential. We introduced a new ERP system and use connected machinery. Data flows directly from engineering to production.

European Business: “Smartbulk” is a key term.

Martijn Wiggers: Exactly. It digitalises our trailers – touchscreen operation, GPS, system integration. The goal is to avoid errors. Wrong deliveries are costly and wasteful – we prevent that.

European Business: Does this support sustainability?

Martijn Wiggers: Absolutely. Fewer errors mean less waste. Optimised processes save time, energy and reduce CO₂.

European Business: What sets Welgro apart?

Martijn Wiggers: Quality – not just the product, but reliability, usability and service. If something isn’t right, we fix it.

European Business: Your company culture?

Martijn Wiggers: Open and down-to-earth. Our family-business roots are still visible. People take pride in their work.

European Business: What’s next?

Martijn Wiggers: FLEXbulk – an open-top trailer enabling more efficient logistics, such as combining inbound and outbound transport.

European Business: What motivates you?

Martijn Wiggers: The team and building on 65 years of history. That responsibility drives me every day.
