The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are and will be devastating for many companies. Especially the equity situation of many businesses will deteriorate as the crisis depletes equity. We spoke with Manfred Thivessen, Managing Director of Bürgschaftsbank NRW, about their concept and opportunities to support companies during the pandemic.

Wirtschaftsforum: Mr. Thivessen, what is the basic idea of the state guarantee banks?

Manfred Thivessen: The guarantee banks were established in West Germany as tools of reconstruction aid after World War II. Our basic idea is to help entrepreneurs and founders who want to implement a project and need a corresponding loan, but cannot provide substance to offer security for it. This is where we come into play and secure these loans. We have a mandate to promote, and therefore our credo is: In case of doubt, for the chance.

Wirtschaftsforum: What information do you need to make a decision when a company applies for a loan from you?

Manfred Thivessen: Every entrepreneur who comes to us is a new customer for us. Therefore, we need a package that provides the following information: Who is the entrepreneur, what is his business model, who are the customers, what products or solutions are offered, and what plans are there for the future. It is not enough to simply submit the balance sheet of the last year. We need current and complete documents, but we do not have extraordinary requirements.

Wirtschaftsforum: Given the current challenges, do you have any advice for entrepreneurs?

Manfred Thivessen: Entrepreneurs should now have the courage to ask questions and seek advice. They should reach for the telephone sooner rather than later and coordinate with us. They should also take advantage of the free business consultations at the chambers. Especially in difficult situations, it is good to ask for advice from independent third parties. Above all, if one can foresee needing help, one should get their package of data and information ready on time.
