Interview with Hariet Dörling, Managing Director of M.E.D. Medical Products GmbH
Surgical routine procedures such as cataract or joint replacement surgeries are increasingly resembling industrial processes where efficiency and consistency are crucial. M.E.D. Medical Products GmbH specializes in helping clinics to maximize this efficiency while ensuring consistently high quality in these life-enhancing procedures. By providing tailored, pre-packaged surgical kits, the company enables smooth and quick performance of surgeries, benefiting both medical staff and patients. In an interview with Wirtschaftsforum, Managing Director Hariet Dörling explains the company's philosophy and the benefits of the custom surgical kits.
Wirtschaftsforum: Ms. Dörling, could you please introduce yourself briefly and tell us how you came to M.E.D. Medical Products?
Hariet Dörling: I started my training at M.E.D. and have been part of the company for 22 years. I have gone through various positions, starting in purchasing, then in sales, and most recently as the sales manager. Since October of the year before last, I have been the sole managing director. M.E.D. belongs to the Swedish corporate group AddLife AB, which combines several companies in the medical technology sector.
Wirtschaftsforum: What products and services does M.E.D. offer?
Hariet Dörling: We are manufacturers of custom surgical sets, which are specifically tailored to the needs of our customers. These include drape sets and consumables such as gowns, drapes, knives, swabs, and syringes. Our sets are individually adapted to the requirements of the clinics, which means that doctors and operating room staff receive exactly what they need for their specific procedures.
Wirtschaftsforum: How do the customized sets contribute to efficiency improvements in clinics?
Hariet Dörling: The use of custom disposable sets saves time and significantly reduces the effort for the surgical staff. Instead of having to collect and compile various materials from the stockroom, the nurses can simply place the set on the table and begin the operation. This allows more time to be spent with patients and increases the number of procedures that can be performed.
Wirtschaftsforum: What role do sustainability and green solutions play in your company?
Hariet Dörling: Sustainability is an important issue for us, even though we produce disposable products. We are continuously working on making our materials more environmentally friendly. For example, we have developed new spunbond materials that do not require plastic elements. Additionally, we offer the option to use 'green' gloves and other sustainable products, even though they are often more expensive. We are aware that the balance between price and sustainability presents a challenge.
Wirtschaftsforum: You have recently moved into new premises. What were the reasons for this?
Hariet Dörling: The move was necessary as we have grown rapidly, especially in recent years, and our old premises were no longer sufficient. By changing locations, we have doubled our capacity and can now produce more efficiently. We have also started working with an external partner to optimize our production processes and ensure quality.
Wirtschaftsforum: How important is quality management for M.E.D., and what measures do you take to ensure the quality of your products?
Hariet Dörling: Quality management is our top priority. We are proud to be considered pioneers in the field of quality management in ophthalmology. To ensure the quality of our products, we rely on strict controls throughout the entire production process. This includes regular checks of raw materials, monitoring of production processes, and the conduct of quality controls.
Wirtschaftsforum: What challenges do you see for the future?
Hariet Dörling: One of the biggest challenges is the ongoing adaptation to changing market conditions and customer requirements. We need to ensure not only that we offer high-quality products but also that we are flexible in responding to the needs of our customers. Moreover, complying with new legal requirements in the field of medical technology is a constant challenge.
Wirtschaftsforum: How do you see the role of M.E.D. in international medical technology?
Hariet Dörling: We want to continue to be seen as a reliable partner in medical technology. Our goal is to establish a presence not only in Europe but also in other international markets. Positive feedback from places like Australia shows us that we are on the right track, and we will continue our efforts to expand into further markets.
Wirtschaftsforum: What personally motivates you to work at this company?
Hariet Dörling: The people who work here are my greatest motivation. It is fulfilling to see how the team collaborates and supports each other to find the best possible solutions for our customers. The dynamics and constant changes in the industry keep the work exciting and challenging. It's great to have a direct impact on people's health and know that our products help improve the lives of patients.
