Engineering Independent Mobilityo
Interview with Reinier Foppen, Managing Director
As societies become more inclusive, expectations for accessible transport continue to grow. Demographic change is adding to this demand, yet the need extends far beyond an ageing population: millions of people with disabilities or temporary mobility limitations rely on transport that enables them to travel independently and participate fully in everyday life. Tribus B.V., headquartered in Utrecht, the Netherlands, develops innovative vehicle conversions and mobility systems designed to make this possible. Managing Director Reinier Foppen explains how engineering excellence, continuous innovation and a clear social purpose are driving the company’s international growth.
European Business: Mr. Foppen, accessible mobility is becoming increasingly important. What role does Tribus play in enabling independent travel for people with reduced mobility?
Reinier Foppen: Our purpose is to make mobility accessible for those who depend on it. Whether someone uses a wheelchair permanently or temporarily, or simply requires additional support, travelling should be as natural and independent as possible. We work with public transport operators, airports, healthcare providers and taxi companies to deliver safe, flexible transport solutions. What motivates us all – and certainly motivates me personally – is knowing that our work helps
people participate fully in everyday life. The greatest compliment we can receive is when someone tells us that travelling in one of our vehicles feels no different from travelling in any other vehicle. That is when we know we have made a real difference.
European Business: Tribus has grown and evolved considerably since it was founded nearly three decades ago. How has the company developed?
Reinier Foppen: Tribus was founded in 1998 by three entrepreneurs, two of whom have remained owners to this day. Initially, the company specialized in vehicle conversions, but over time we realized we could create even greater value by developing our own products. Today, we design, manufacture and continuously refine our own flooring and seating systems to meet changing customer needs. We have expanded internationally with operations in Germany and the United States, while our component business now serves customers in 35 countries. Over the years, Tribus has become an internationally recognized engineering company, driven by innovation and a commitment to independent mobility.
European Business: What distinguishes Tribus from its competitors?
Reinier Foppen: Engineering is at the heart of everything we do. We have a large development team that continuously works on new solutions and is already developing the next generation of products. At the same time, we remain completely independent of vehicle manufacturers, allowing customers to choose the platform that best meets their requirements. Another important advantage is our close relationship with the market. We not only listen to operators and purchasing mana-gers, but also to drivers and daily users, allowing us to translate practical experience into better products.
European Business: Digitalization and sustainability are transforming manufacturing. How are these trends shaping Tribus?
Reinier Foppen: Both are becoming increasingly important. We are currently implementing a new ERP platform, expanding our CRM environment and integrating more digital tools throughout our organization. Artificial intelligence will increasingly support both our internal processes and future product development. Sustainability goes hand in hand with these developments. We invest in solar energy and battery storage, electrify our vehicle fleet and continuously improve our production processes. At product level, we increasingly focus on repairability, refurbishment and the use of recyclable materials to minimize our environmental footprint throughout the product life cycle.
“If someone with reduced mobility can travel with the same confidence, comfort and independence as anyone else, we know we have truly made a difference.”
European Business: Internationalization has become an important growth driver. What are your ambitions for the coming years?
Reinier Foppen: Today, our vehicle conversion business is focused primarily on the Netherlands and Germany, while our component business has developed into a truly international operation. We see considerable opportunities in neighbouring European markets as well as further overseas. Rather than simply supplying products, we increasingly provide complete conversion kits, engineering expertise and
training, enabling partners around the world to build accessible vehicles using our technology. This combination of product innovation and knowledge transfer creates long-term partnerships.
European Business: Looking ahead, what are your priorities for the future?
Reinier Foppen: We are working on a new generation of intelligent mobility solutions, including an electric low-floor vehicle and products with enhanced monitoring and safety features. At the same time, we will continue investing in our people because innovation always begins with talented, committed employees. Our ambition is to make independent mobility available to even more people around the world. For me personally, that is what makes this role so rewarding. If someone with reduced mobility can travel with the same confidence, comfort and independence as anyone else, we know we have truly made a difference.
