Their beginnings are in the broadcasting sector and the heart of AVI.DAT Software & Technology GmbH still beats for this—though differently from before. The Leipzig company has not only developed MIRAAN, a broadcast management software for public broadcasting stations, but is also active in the fields of IT management and service for large customers. In an interview with Wirtschaftsforum, Managing Director Patrik Albus talked about a truly 'speaking' company name.

Since 2017, the company has been known as AVI.DAT Software & Technology GmbH. 'It is now an indirect company of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, which was founded in 1995 to help build Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR),' reflects Managing Director Patrik Albus on the beginnings. After the construction work was completed, MDR conducted an outsourcing program that outsourced individual departments involved in the construction to external companies. The current AVI.DAT initially took over the Television System Service and Radio System Service departments, underwent the digital transformation, and became a data processing firm. 'In fact, the development of the company can be derived from its name,' reveals Patrik Albus. 'A stands for Audio, V for Video, and DAT for Data. Generating data, creating knowledge, and making decisions based on that knowledge – that is the current motto of AVI.DAT.'

AVI.DAT Software & Technology GmbH Overview MIRAAN

Three Business Areas

The business of AVI.DAT is based on three pillars, as the managing director explains: "In the area of IT Management, we process large data volumes. Our main customer here is Vodafone Deutschland GmbH; however, we also work for companies like Parship & Elite Group, for whom we have created an AD-server solution in Europe and a cloud-based solution for Lemon-Swan in the USA. Furthermore, we develop software, especially for public broadcasting stations. This includes the Broadcast Management software MIRAAN, which covers the complete workflow of a regional broadcasting station from program creation to film production. Our third business area is service; we are members of MDR Media GmbH, for which we operate a data and voice network. Additionally, we offer high-quality conference technology for media projects." AVI.DAT employs 70 staff, generating an annual turnover of seven million EUR.

Full Schedule

Currently, AVI.DAT is only active throughout Germany. However, Patrik Albus can well imagine an expansion across the entire DACH region. For the second half of 2024, the CEO still has a lot on his agenda: "We are now building the interfaces between SAP and MIRAAN for WDR and we also have some larger conference projects in sight, for example for DHL. In the future, I would like to attract more customers for Big Data and further expand MIRAAN."
