Sustainability in every dish
Interview with Christel-Anna Brechtel, CEO of BERNDES Küche GmbH
With over 100 years of history, BERNDES Küche GmbH has become a cornerstone of the cookware industry, blending tradition with cutting-edge innovation. Founded in 1921 by Heinrich Berndes in Arnsberg, the company revolutionized the market with the first non-stick cast aluminum cookware. Today, under the leadership of CEO Christel-Anna Brechtel, BERNDES continues to set new standards with a focus on sustainability, quality, and functionality. From iconic pans to an expanded range of versatile cookware, BERNDES remains committed to crafting products that enhance modern cooking while respecting the planet.
European Business: Ms. Brechtel, BERNDES celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021. That’s an impressive milestone. What makes this long history special to you?
Christel-Anna Brechtel: Absolutely. A century is not just a milestone, it’s also a responsibility. Our roots go back to 1921 when Heinrich Berndes founded the company. His vision was to rethink cookware entirely — making it functional, high-quality, and innovative. These principles still guide us today. I see it as my role to preserve this tradition while introducing modern strategies for the future.
European Business: BERNDES has a fascinating history, marked by success but also by challenges. Can you share more about this journey?
Christel-Anna Brechtel: Yes, BERNDES’ history hasn’t always been straightforward. After initial successes, the company faced challenging periods later on. In 2012, the company went through insolvency and was forced to start anew with just 15 employees. Today, thanks to hard work and a clear strategy, we’re back on solid ground and looking forward with confidence.
European Business: Sustainability is a big topic these days. How does BERNDES address this?
Christel-Anna Brechtel: It’s a key priority for us. Since 2018, we’ve focused on sustainable technologies, such as our b.nature coating made from quartz. It’s completely free of plastics, PFOA, and heavy metals, making our products nearly 100% recyclable. Our packaging is reusable, and our aluminum is sourced from recycled materials. This aligns with our motto: reduce, reuse, recycle. We’re also working on reducing the carbon footprint of our production. We are continuously exploring ways to lower the carbon footprint of our production processes, with a focus on energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources. For us, sustainability isn’t just a passing trend; it is a long-term commitment to protecting the environment and creating a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come.
European Business: How has BERNDES’ product range evolved in recent years?
Christel-Anna Brechtel: For a long time, we were best known for our pans, especially iconic ones like the Bonanza® pan, which has been a bestseller for over 50 years. However, our goal is to remain a comprehensive cookware provider. This includes pots, roasters, and multifunctional products like the b.double round, which can be used as a roaster or casserole. Our products are defined by their quality and innovative features — such as detachable handles for added flexibility.
European Business: You mentioned innovation. What does that mean for BERNDES today?
Christel-Anna Brechtel: Innovation is our driving force. In 1976, BERNDES was the first company to launch non-stick aluminum cast cookware. That pioneering spirit still inspires us. Today, we’re developing new coating technologies, focusing on natural materials like quartz. Our aim is to create products that are not only functional but also enhance people’s quality of life – for instance, by promoting healthier and more sustainable cooking. Innovation means to come from the end consumer of the future in respect of usage, convenience and cooking behaviour. To meet the consumer expectations and needs has absolut priority.
European Business: The market is highly competitive, especially with low-cost providers. How does BERNDES compete?
Christel-Anna Brechtel: That’s true, the market is flooded with cheap products. But this is where quality makes the difference. BERNDES is synonymous with durability, sustainability, and tested performance. With over 100 years of expertise, we offer products that are a long-term investment. Our customers know they’re not just buying cookware – they’re investing in something that lasts and aligns with their values.
European Business: What does the future hold for BERNDES?
Christel-Anna Brechtel: We have ambitious growth plans. Our focus is on further developing the brand and expanding our product portfolio. We also want to solidify our position as a leader in sustainable cookware. With the dedication of our employees, who take immense pride in their work, I am confident that BERNDES will continue to thrive.
European Business: Lastly, what motivates you personally as CEO?
Christel-Anna Brechtel: For me, it is vital that both management and employees are passionate about the company. BERNDES is more than just a brand — it has a soul. This soul is reflected in our products, our quality, and the responsibility we take on. It fills me with pride to be part of this journey and actively shape the future of BERNDES.
