In the heart of the Carinthian Alps, high atop the majestic Gerlitzen Alpe, the Hotel Feuerberg is perched and uniquely combines the elements of water, fire, and air. Surrounded by breathtaking mountain panoramas and clear, refreshing mountain lakes, the hotel offers an oasis of tranquility and relaxation. Here, the soothing powers of water flow into the relaxing wellness offerings, while the fiery ambiance comes alive in the culinary creations and the warm hospitality of the Berger family owners. In an interview with the Wirtschaftsforum, Emanuel Berger, the fifth-generation Managing Director, talks about the diverse attractions of a unique place.

Wirtschaftsforum: Mr. Berger, what are the most important milestones in the development of the Fireberg?

Emanuel Berger: The Fireberg has a long history, dating back to the late 19th century. Originally, the area was a mountain pasture where cows were driven to the Gerlitzen Alpe in the summer. In the 1920s, my great-grandfather, Emil Berger, began building alpine huts. Over the years, the company evolved. My grandfather built the first cable car and expanded the road, making it easier for guests to reach us. After a challenging period in the 1980s, my parents took over the business and in 2007, a major wave of investment began, making us what we are today.

Wirtschaftsforum: You’re talking about investments. How much have you invested in the resort since 2007?

Emanuel Berger: Since 2007, we have invested about 50 million EUR in Feuerberg. These investments are driven by the desire to offer our guests a unique experience and to stage the beauty of nature.

Wirtschaftsforum: Did you already have a clear vision for Feuerberg in 2007?

Emanuel Berger: The vision was certainly not as clear back then as it is today. We knew we wanted to bring water and warmth to the mountain and that the guest experience should be central. Over the years, this vision has sharpened, and we have continually expanded our offering.

Wirtschaftsforum: Feuerberg is a place full of possibilities. What exactly do you offer your guests?

Emanuel Berger: We have a wide range of activities, from sports hikes and yoga to deeper offerings like meditation, ZEN archery, and much more. This year, we have also created an 'Experience Realm' designed to inform about the diverse leisure and experience opportunities in the region and in the house for all age groups.

Wirtschaftsforum: How many employees do you employ to realize all these services?

Emanuel Berger: We employ about 170 employees. There are seasonal fluctuations, but overall the occupancy is stable throughout the year.

Wirtschaftsforum: What does the seasonal distribution look like? Is summer or winter more important for your business?

Emanuel Berger: Every season has its charm. In spring, summer, and autumn, we combine hiking holidays with wellness enjoyment, while in winter, skiing and relaxation afterward are at the forefront. Our occupancy rate is above 90% throughout the year.

Wirtschaftsforum: How do you manage to attract a wide audience?

Emanuel Berger: We learn a lot from guest feedback, and our offerings are designed to work for various target groups. Families, couples, and those seeking peace can all enjoy their vacation here equally without any disturbances.

Wirtschaftsforum: What is special about your culinary offerings?

Emanuel Berger: Our culinary concept is based on regional products that we source from local suppliers. We offer a mix of traditional Carinthian cuisine and international dishes. Our chef has many innovative ideas that we incorporate into our menu design.

Wirtschaftsforum: How has your company developed during the coronavirus pandemic?

Emanuel Berger: We have weathered the time well and are better positioned today than ever before. The pandemic presented challenges, but we took the opportunity to continue developing and growing.

Wirtschaftsforum: What about the issue of sustainability? What measures have you taken in this regard?

Emanuel Berger: Sustainability is very important to us. We have heavily invested in energy efficiency, insulated our buildings, and rely on renewable energies. We also support local organic farming and strive to minimize waste.

Wirtschaftsforum: What are your plans for the future?

Emanuel Berger: My goal is to continue developing Feuerberg and provide our guests with unforgettable moments by making further improvements in the culinary and accommodation areas.
