"Our architecture promotes well-being and healing"
Interview with Hieronimus Nickl, Managing Partner of Nickl & Partner Architekten AG
Under the guiding principle 'Architecture for People', Nickl & Partner Architekten AG relies on innovative construction concepts that promote healing and well-being. This internationally active office has made a name for itself especially in healthcare architecture and is driving the future of the industry with modular and sustainable projects. In a discussion with Wirtschaftsforum, Managing Director Hieronimus Nickl explained how the company implements this vision in global projects and the role technology and sustainability play.
Wirtschaftsforum: Mr. Nickl, can you provide us an overview of the history and development of your company?
Hieronimus Nickl: Certainly. My father founded the company in 1979. Today, I run it as the second generation together with my brother. Originally, our focus was on hospital planning, as my father came from that sector. A significant milestone was our first major competition, a project in Weiden, which kept us busy for over 25 years. Another important step was the development of the pavilion hospital, which laid the foundation for our concept of 'Healing Architecture'. Over the years, we have continued to grow, first in Germany, and later internationally with locations in Zurich, Beijing, and Paris. Especially in the last 20 years, we have pushed forward with our globalization, most recently with the opening of our office in Düsseldorf.
Wirtschaftsforum: You talk about 'Healing Architecture'. What exactly is understood by this?
Hieronimus Nickl: 'Healing Architecture' means that architecture actively contributes to the well-being of people. Especially in hospitals, it is important to reduce the stress of patients and staff through a pleasant environment. A hospital stay is in itself a stressful experience. Through a soothing, people-friendly construction, we can reduce this burden. It is about putting people at the center of architectural design. Functional and well-thought-out spaces not only promote the healing process but also the well-being of staff and patients.
Wirtschaftsforum: How have the recent years, especially due to the coronavirus pandemic, affected your business?
Hieronimus Nickl: Corona has primarily slowed the decision-making processes of our public clients. However, a positive aspect was the increased use of digital technologies. We have learned a lot about networking and virtual collaboration, but it must not be forgotten that personal coaching by experienced project managers is still crucial. Young graduates need guidance and support to develop—this cannot be replaced by a virtual meeting.
Wirtschaftsforum: Sustainability today plays a central role in many areas. How do you integrate sustainable concepts into your architecture projects?
Hieronimus Nickl: Sustainability is not just a trend for us. We focus on resource-saving materials and energy-efficient solutions such as natural ventilation and daylighting. A good example is our project in Shenzhen, where we have integrated green roofs that improve the microclimate. Our goal is to create environmentally friendly and healthy living spaces in the long term.
Wirtschaftsforum: How do you use modern technologies to advance your architectural projects?
Hieronimus Nickl: Technology is a crucial factor for us. With digital planning methods such as BIM (Building Information Modeling), we can optimize our processes and achieve precise results. At the same time, we integrate smart building technologies that reduce energy consumption and increase comfort for users. Thus, we create sustainable and technologically advanced solutions.
Wirtschaftsforum: Could you name some current projects that are particularly representative of your work?
Hieronimus Nickl: A standout project that we have just completed is the ETH Zurich research lab in Basel. It is a state-of-the-art laboratory building with a large cleanroom component. Another interesting project is the Kantonsspital Baden, which we will soon finish after eight years of planning and construction. Here too, our concept of ‘Healing Architecture’ plays a central role in aligning functionality and wellbeing.
Wirtschaftsforum: What are your plans for the future of Nickl & Partner?
Hieronimus Nickl: We want to continue to grow, but specifically in selected regions, and not necessarily expanding into more countries. Particularly important to us is the further development of modular construction concepts. Additionally, we focus on sustainability and environmental protection – issues that are becoming increasingly important for our clients. Our vision is to make a positive contribution to society through innovative and sustainable architecture.
Wirtschaftsforum: What personally drives you, Mr. Nickl?
Hieronimus Nickl: I am motivated by the thought that our projects improve the lives of people. We create built environments that are not only functional but also aesthetic and beneficial. That is what drives me: to design buildings that have a positive impact on their users and the environment.
