Pioneer in Retreading
Interview with Günter Ihle, Managing Director of RIGDON GmbH
Tire retreading is a smart solution to significantly extend the life of tires while also reducing ecological footprint. Especially in industries where tires are subjected to high stresses, such as in the commercial vehicle sector, retreading presents a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to buying new. RIGDON GmbH from Günzburg combines state-of-the-art technology with environmentally conscious craftsmanship, making it a pioneer in this field.
In the retreading process, worn tires are made fully functional again by renewing the tread. RIGDON GmbH, based in Günzburg an der Donau, stands for innovation, sustainability, and technological excellence in the field of tire retreading. Under the leadership of Günter Ihle, who has been the managing director since the company's re-establishment in 2014, the company has developed into one of the leading players in this industry.
Successful New Beginning
The roots of RIGDON GmbH go back to 1947 to the company Reifen Ihle, which was founded by Günter Ihle's uncle. This company evolved over the years into an important player in the tire industry, operating a total of twelve locations with an annual turnover of over 50 million EUR. At the end of 2014, Günter Ihle, together with two other investors, decided to make a bold new start.
RIGDON GmbH, whose name stands for ‘Reifen Ihle Günzburg an der Donau’, was launched. The goal was clear: to restructure the company and establish itself as a market leader in a demanding, changing environment.
The tire industry faces major challenges, especially in terms of growing demands for sustainability and environmental protection. For RIGDON GmbH, however, this is an opportunity to position itself as an innovative leader. "In today's times, where the CO2 footprint must be documented, we have a product that is extremely green," emphasizes Günter Ihle. Particularly in the commercial vehicle sector, retreading plays a crucial role: In Germany, the share of retreaded tires in this segment is over 30%.
Advanced Technology
With its advanced retreading technology, RIGDON GmbH significantly contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions. "Retreaded tires are in no way inferior to the quality of new tires," emphasizes the managing director. "For instance, Reifen Ihle holds the world record at 281 km/h in the desert of Dubai with a retreaded truck tire." The company operates a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that spans 88,000 m2, where tires of all size classes can be retreaded. An investment of nearly 25 million EUR, which will be made shortly and is supported by the BMUV's Environmental Innovation Program, will now be used to expand the retreading of passenger car tires.
"We want to restore the standing of the sustainable passenger car tire," says Günter Ihle. The company plans to equip the production facility with the latest robotic technology and artificial intelligence to ensure high automation and efficiency. A retreaded passenger car tire saves about 21 kg, and a truck tire saves 137 kg of CO2. Through retreading, nearly 80% of the original tire can be reused.
RIGDON GmbH has established itself as a technology leader in the field of retreading through a combination of artisan precision and advanced technology. "We are bringing a heavily craftsmanship-oriented branch into automation," explains Günter Ihle. In addition to tire manufacturing, RIGDON GmbH offers a comprehensive service that covers all corporate fields. Another significant area is RIGDON Storage – an advanced storage system that has been among the top systems in tire storage technology for years.
People at the Center
A crucial factor for the success of RIGDON GmbH is the strong and dedicated team. "We have been through thick and thin and have developed an incredible team spirit," emphasizes Günter Ihle. The company employs almost 100 employees who contribute significantly to RIGDON's technology leadership through their cohesion and passion. "Our team is tightly welded together," continues the managing director. "That is one of the reasons why we are able to consistently ensure the highest quality and safety."
RIGDON GmbH has clear goals for the future: 'We aim to maintain our technological leadership and drive it forward significantly,' explains Günter Ihle. The use of robots in the automotive industry is widespread, but in tire retreading, it is a novelty. RIGDON is proud to operate the very first facility of this kind and plans to further expand this technology.
An important milestone for the company will be reached in October 2024, when the first AZuR Tire Retreading Summit takes place in Günzburg. The goal of this summit is to discuss the future of retreading technology together with other market players and political representatives, and to articulate specific expectations for the political framework. 'It is important for us to actively promote this topic,' emphasizes Günter Ihle, who also serves as deputy guild master of the Tire and Vulcanization Trades and is a member of the bvse Specialist Association for Recycling of Tires and Rubber, playing a role in the industry. With a clear focus on sustainability, technological progress, and a strong team culture, RIGDON GmbH is well-equipped to significantly shape the future of a sustainable tire cycle in line with the circular economy and set new standards.
