Progress Meets Precision in Orthopedic Technology
Interview with Frank Starkowski, Managing Director of Orthopädie-Technik-Service aktiv GmbH
Frank Starkowski, Managing Director of Orthopädie-Technik-Service aktiv GmbH, offers exciting insights into the innovative development of his company in conversation. He discusses the use of new technologies, the ongoing digitalization, and the international expansion plans. Additionally, he explains how the company successfully integrates skilled workers from around the world.
Wirtschaftsforum: Mr. Starkowski, which steps were particularly important for the development of your company?
Frank Starkowski: A key factor for the further development of our company was to intensely deal with innovative topics that go beyond the current state of technology. About five to six years ago, we started developing our own products. This is quite unique in our industry, as many companies only adapt existing technologies. We consciously decided to distinguish ourselves through real innovations and create new products with unique characteristics.
Wirtschaftsforum: How has the company structurally changed since then?
Frank Starkowski: We now employ our own small research department with four engineers. This department not only works for us but also carries out contract work for other companies and industries. Additionally, we have established subsidiaries that specialize in the mass production of our market-ready products.
Wirtschaftsforum: How many locations do you currently have?
Frank Starkowski: We currently have 14 locations, all situated in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Our core business is firmly rooted in the northeast of Germany, which allows us a strong regional presence. We focus on this region to provide our local customers with optimal supply and support.
Wirtschaftsforum: Can you tell us more about your employees and the revenue of your company?
Frank Starkowski: We currently employ about 85 people, including both long-term employees and newly recruited experts. This mix of experience and new perspectives significantly enriches our corporate culture. We place great emphasis on their further education and integration. Our annual revenue is around eight million EUR, which is considerable for a company of our size and in our industry.
Wirtschaftsforum: How do you utilize digitalization and artificial intelligence in your company?
Frank Starkowski: Digitalization plays a major role. One example is our smart insole that detects inflammatory processes in diabetics early and provides information via an app. This technology enables preventive healthcare, which can make a big difference in the daily lives of our clients. Therefore, we see AI as a supportive tool, but not as a replacement for personal contact.
Wirtschaftsforum: What steps have you taken towards internationalization?
Frank Starkowski: In recruiting skilled workers, we have become more international. For example, we hired an IT staff member from Iran. Searching for qualified employees sometimes requires looking beyond national borders. Additionally, we collaborate on projects with international partners to further develop our products and tap into new markets. Our innovative insole, for instance, has already attracted interest in other European countries, and we are currently exploring opportunities for expansion into these markets.
Wirtschaftsforum: How would you describe your corporate culture?
Frank Starkowski: Our corporate culture is characterized by flat hierarchies and open communication. We know our employees personally and place great emphasis on them feeling like part of the community. Another important aspect is the integration of international professionals, who not only help us address our shortage of skilled workers, but also enrich our culture and thinking.
Wirtschaftsforum: What future plans do you have for the company?
Frank Starkowski: We would like to further enhance our innovative character. This includes the continuous development of new products that meet market requirements. We plan to further strengthen our research capacities and establish closer partnerships with universities and research institutes. Our vision is to be considered a leader in orthopedic technology and healthcare both in Germany and internationally, while always focusing on the needs of our customers.
