Quality is Our Thing
Interview with Frank Pauls, Managing Director of The Tea Company GmbH & Co. KG
Quality is our cup of tea – Quality is our thing – this is the apt philosophy of The Tea Company GmbH & Co. KG. The tea wholesaler from Neu Wulmstorf pays fair prices so that the growers can produce reasonable qualities. In addition, good tea requires impeccable water, the right preparation and – last but not least – peace and time.
The focus of The Tea Company is on the import and trade of high-quality, exquisite tea varieties from selected tea gardens in the growing regions of Africa, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The company, certified according to International Featured Standards (IFS), supports its customers along the entire process chain, from product selection and recipe development to packaging and logistics. Managing Director Frank Pauls, who, before founding The Tea Company on his own in 2011, worked for 20 years in a major tea import and export company, explains: "I always wanted to do something on my own." For Frank Pauls and his team of 14 employees, tea is more than just a beverage. "Tea is a real matter of the heart for us and also a constant companion in everyday life."
Individuality as a Strength
In recent years, The Tea Company has built an excellent reputation.
"Our employees are highly valued in the market," says Frank Pauls, who himself has excellent contacts in the market, especially with the countries of origin of the teas. Another strength of The Tea Company: They have not settled on standard products, but have always taken the more uncomfortable path of individuality.
"Customers want to distinguish themselves from the competition with unique varieties," explains Frank Pauls. In addition, they continually pick up on new industry trends, such as Matcha Tea from Japan. The range includes a wide selection of high-quality black and green teas.
"We aim to keep the level of tea high in Germany," says Frank Pauls, for whom a good tea depends not only on the quality of the raw materials but also on proper water and the right preparation. This requires time and tranquility. Last year, 450 tons of tea were handled. The suppliers are carefully checked. "We influence cultivation by paying fair prices, so the grower has the opportunity to produce reasonable qualities and is not dependent on the mass market," says Frank Pauls. Worldwide, 6.3 million tons of tea are harvested annually.
In the overall market, we only play a smaller, but not to be underestimated role, because we have managed to maintain a high level of quality, according to Frank Pauls. "We want to raise awareness for our product, because tea is a natural product that is fun. Tea is meant to make people happy." He added: "When considered per serving, tea is probably the most economical drink in the world next to water. Dear consumers: it is worth investing in good quality tea."
