The clean mountain air and magnificent mountain panoramas of the Swiss Alps have long attracted visitors from England. The English have a particular fondness for Switzerland, fuelled no doubt by stories such as Johanna Spyri’s ‘Heidi’, which praised the restorative benefits of time spent in the mountains, close to nature. By the turn of the century, English visitors had discovered mountain paradises such as St. Moritz and Zermatt, turning them into the hugely popular tourist destinations that they are today. Visitors wishing, however, for a flavour of turn-of-the-century Switzerland should stay at Suvretta House in St. Moritz.
